How Sump Pumps Prevent Basement Flooding
Sump Pit : A sump pit is often a hole dug in the lowest part of the basement floor. It is coated with a waterproof membrane to prevent wetness from affecting the surrounding environment.
Sump Pump : A sump pump is installed at the bottom of the sump pit. It is designed to turn on when the water levels in the pit become too high.
Water Removal : Upon activating, the sump pump drains water out of the sump pit and directs it away from the house via a hose that releases water to a storm drain or into the yard, respectively.
Backflow Prevention : To prevent the water from re-flowing into the basement, you install a check valve on the discharge pipe. This valve allows water to be released but not to flow back in again.
When to Repair or Replace Your Sump Pump
Frequent Activation : It may also indicate that something is wrong if your sump pump runs more frequently than normal to pump out the water that has accumulated. This may be a result of more rain, a damaged pump, or a blockage on the drain pipe that conducts water.
Unusual Noises : Sump pumps should operate quietly. If you detect strange sounds, such as grinding or squealing, they could be mechanical strains that require repairs. These noises may be due to bearing wear, a broken motor, or a blocked impeller.
Water Leakage : Water dripping around the base of the sump pump or the pipe through which water leaves the pit is a definite sign that something is wrong. This may be due to a crack or damage in the housing, loose contacts, or even a damaged seal.
Reduced Water Flow : If you find that the water in the sump pit is being pumped out at a slower rate than before, this may mean that the pump has become less efficient. This may be due to a clogged impeller, a bad motor, or even clogging of the pipe through which the water is channeled away.
